Burkitt Lymphoma

Lessons From the Friday Unknowns

Histological sections show needle shaped fragments of soft tissue extensively involved by lymphoma.

The lymphoma has a diffuse growth pattern and is composed of intermediate sized cells with moderate to high NC ratio, speckled chromatin, inconspicuous nucleoli. Frequent mitosis and apoptosis are seen. Many scattered tingible body macrophages are identified, imparting a starry sky pattern. Areas of necrosis are seen.

Concurrent flow cytometry demonstrates the presence of monotypic B lymphocytes, positive for CD19 and CD20, CD38 bright, CD44 variable, with kappa light chain restriction. The abnormal lymphocytes are negative for CD5 and CD10.

The findings support diagnosis of Burkitt lymphoma. Further classification will be rendered once results of additional studies are available.
